Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Most Reviewed Features

Finding a camera that takes good 12 megapixel resolution photos is not difficult if you have the money. But finding a camera that does not break the bank, fits in your Jeans pocket, takes 12 megapixel photos as well as video in HD is almost kind of myth. No wonder, most people who bought the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS, at least based on the reviews, were initially skeptical about whether it would really deliver on its promises. The following are some of the key features that were highly reviewed.

1. Picture Quality

By far the most reviewed feature, picture quality of this camera was a major factor for all the reviewers with only 7 out of 10 reviewers rating it very highly. Here is what some reviewers had to say:

“I was very pleased with the image capture. The Pictures were very clear and it almost always took a great picture even if the lighting was poor or I was moving around, says one reviewer.”

“This is my first camera with image stabilization and it works very well. On a recent trip I took over 500 pictures and not one of them ended up blurry”

But for those who were not pleased, the main complaint was that the pictures were blurry:

“Image quality for most part is ok if you shoot under ideal conditions – not too much sunlight, not too dark, no one is moving and you hold the camera very still.”

“The picture quality of this cam proves that and says it all – grainy and blurry for inside shots (retouching required)”

2. HD Video

HD video should normally fall under the 'picture quality' category but in this case, I decided to review it separately as it seemed to have had some special effect on reviews on both sides. Even critics of the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS were blown away by the quality of its  HD video with only 2 critics trashing the feature. For most, what took the cake was not jusT the quality of the HD video but the fact that quality was coming out of a minute camera:

“It seemed improbable to me that a video made with a camera this small would look good on a 55” HD television. I was stunned at how sharp it looked.”

“The 720p high def video is the one that steals the deal. You know its fast. You know its accurate. You know its easy. But the video always catches you off guard. 'Wait, you mean to tell me this camera smaller that a my Blackberry curve can take High Def video as well as pictures'”

Sound, however was a bone of contention with HD video recording with some critics claiming that the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS records some background noise during HD Recording even when the recording is done in total silence:

“The major complaint about this camera was the HD recording and the background video noise is produces. I watched it on Youtube and it was bad – but I still took the risk and bought the camera.  My camera did not make this noise thankfully.”

“… in my experience it only occurs at a higher ISO, is not noticeable and seems to be in line with other compact cameras that I have used, no more, no less.”

3. Facial recognition

The facial recognition abilities of the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS were also highly featured in the reviews with most but one who mentioned it confessing being amazed with this feature.

“… it picks up faces on magazines, ads, anything that has a human face on it.”

“The face recognition feature is awesome. It almost always succeeds in recognizing the face and focuses on the. It even focuses on faces of statues. It also follows the face if the person is moving.”

4. Does Size Matter?

It matters.  At least, as far as this camera is concerned. According to the reviews, most people bought and decided to keep the camera because of its size and looks. Jit is so small it fit in half the palm of an adult person. This means it can easily fit into the pockets of your Jeans, meaning it comes with you wherever you go – along with your your phone. However , due to its size, there is only so much that Canon could fit on it in terms of buttons and controls. And this is where reviewers crossed swords. For most buyers, however, the petite size is what clinched the deal.

“It weighs a little more than 4 ounces. The size of the camera is astonishing. It is smaller than my iPhone and my Wallet.”

“The real virtue of this camera is its portability.”

“The small size of the Canon SD780 IS is mind-blowing."

But for a few others, the small size was a curse.

“Though I do not have large fingers, operating the camera feels a bit clumsy. I'll keep it, however.”

“When attempting to push power button, I will often realize I am pushing on the bottom of the camera. I have to actually look at it to tell what I am doing.”

“The Small size and smooth symmetrical shape sometimes make it hard to tell which side I am holding onto when I take it out of my pocket.”

5. LCD Screen and View finder

Having an LCD screen let alone adding a view finder on a camera this small can be a challenge with potential for disaster.  But for most reviewers, these were some of the best features of the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.

“While it (the viewfinder) is quite tiny, I have actually used it and I find it to be quiet serviceable.”

“At some point a camera gets so small that it's difficult to squeeze everything onto its surface area. Kudos to Canon for even including the optical view finder at all.”

Not everyone was pleased, however:

“My problem was the LCD screen randomly going white and staying that way. I've seen a few reviews from people with the same problem. Canon seems to be  famous for high quality but I barely used it and I take care of my cameras. There is no reason the LCD would have stopped working.”

6. Controls
The controls of the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS formed another area of contention. For others there seemed to be a challenge with getting the best out the camera using programable controls. In this regards the 'SmartAuto' and 'Program' controls got quite some mention.

"Auto mode" chooses the settings poorly in my opinion. There is a "Program" mode that allows you to select more specifically (white balance, color choice, vivid vs neutral, lighting conditions, etc), so I ended up re-shooting the same thing in the "P" mode and got much better picture. But if you're like my husband (the primary user of this point-and-shoot), he says it's annoying to change settings all the time, so naturally he gravitates toward the "Auto."

"Never use 'Auto' for night time shots – you will see blurry, yellow results. Switch into Program Mode and use preset setting... tested kids/pets Mode and also works well indoors at night."

Conclusion

Based on the 10 Amazon Reviews it is clear that the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS had more helpful favorable reviews than helpful critical reviews. In particular, the most mentioned features that attracted most  reviews were the aesthetics (size and looks) of the camera, the quality of its pictures (both for stills and HD video) and ease of use.  This is certainly a good camera to have if you are looking for a portable, camera that delivered great pictures and HD video at this price range. this is an awesome camera to work with. You will have to take note of comments from both sides of the isle and make necessary adjustments or indeed, figure it out, yourself. Go on and start traveling light but fully loaded.
